The Story of This Rug
The central medallion and corner-quarter tradition is the best-known compositional scheme in Safavid Persian rug design; the medallion represents the "celestial dome," while the corner quarters represent its reflection in the four directions. In the 19th century, Ziegler & Co. adapted this scheme in Sultanabad into a soft interpretation using root dyes. This rug continues that tradition with a small central medallion and a rich network of palmettes.
