The Story of This Rug

Shah Abbas motifs matured in Safavid court workshops in the 17th century, forming the foundation of the classical Persian garden aesthetic that links palmettes, rosettes, and scrolling vines. The rugs produced by the Ziegler firm in Sultanabad at the end of the 19th century brought this heritage to the European market; today, Afghan weavers continue the same tradition in workshops in Mazar-i-Sharif. The Tobacco Beige ground enhances the rug’s harmony with modern interiors.

Why Choose a One-of-a-Kind Handwoven Afghan Rug

  1. Each rug is made by a single weaving team; reproducing an identical piece is impossible.
  2. 100% Ghazni sheep’s wool resists staining thanks to its natural lanolin and develops a beautiful patina over the years.
  3. Natural root and bark dyes soften and mellow over time, unlike synthetic colors.
  4. The asymmetrical Persian knot creates a dense and durable weave.
  5. The natural washed finish gives the rug an antique texture and a soft hand.

Color and Pattern

Large palmettes occupy the center of the Tobacco Beige ground, surrounded by an all-over system of rosettes and scrolling vines. Madder red, golden yellow, and indigo tones enliven the motifs, while ivory corner pieces frame the composition. A chain of palmettes and rosettes surrounds the ground in the border.

Care Recommendations

  • Vacuum once a week at low power without using a brush.
  • Blot stains gently with a damp white cloth; do not rub.
  • Have the rug inspected by a professional rug cleaner every 3–4 years.
  • Keep it away from direct sunlight and use a rug pad.

As a numbered one-of-a-kind original, this rug is a unique piece bearing the weaver’s signature.

Protect Your Rug’s Elegance
A careful care routine should be adopted to preserve the original splendor and silky texture of Carpetdocia’s handwoven, natural-fiber creations—pieces that add value to your living space—for generations to come.

Immediate Action and Liquid Spills
When a liquid is spilled, timing is the most critical factor. Using a clean, slightly damp cloth, remove the liquid from the surface by gently blotting only—never rub. Always work in the direction of the rug’s pile (the natural direction in which the fibers lie). Rubbing can damage the structure of delicate fibers such as TENCEL™ and viscose. If in doubt, stop immediately.

Routine Care and Light Balance
For your weekly cleaning routine, always use vacuum cleaners with low suction power. High-powered upright vacuums and stiff brushes can damage the natural structure of handwoven yarns. To balance the natural fibers’ reaction to light and prevent uneven color changes (fading), we recommend changing the direction of your rug every 2 to 6 months.

Expert Care (Professional Cleaning)
Delicate materials such as handwoven fibers, TENCEL™, viscose, and New Zealand wool should not come into contact with household chemical cleaners. These products can irreversibly damage the rug’s silky sheen and structural integrity. For deep cleaning, seek assistance only from professional rug-care centers specializing in natural fibers.

Washing Instructions
The delicate pieces in the Carpetdocia collections are not suitable for machine washing due to their construction. (Only specific models clearly marked “Washable” in their names may be washed in household machines using a low-temperature, delicate cycle.)
