The Story Behind This Rug
The Shah Abbas design takes its name from Safavid Shah Abbas I, who patronized the workshops of Isfahan in the 17th century. This composition of oversized palmettes, lotus flowers, and arabesque entwined branches represents the pinnacle of palace carpet art. Afghan artisans combine this heritage with their knowledge of root dyes: the wool is treated with alum and iron mordants, dyed repeatedly in plant extracts, then washed in the sun and running water after weaving to develop its characteristic patina.
Why Choose a One-of-a-Kind Handwoven Afghan Rug
- Uniqueness: There is only one of this rug; its knotting rhythm and dye batch can never be replicated.
- Durable botanical dyes: Unlike synthetic aniline dyes, root dyes do not fade; they simply soften over time.
- Ghazni wool: Long-fiber wool with a high lanolin content, from high-altitude sheep, offers natural stain resistance and a silky sheen.
- Asymmetrical Persian knot: Finer detail resolution and sharper motif edges than the Turkish (Gördes) knot.
- Investment value: Genuine Afghan rugs dyed with botanical dyes appreciate in value with use across generations.
Color and Design
Oversized Shah Abbas palmettes and lotus rosettes are arranged symmetrically on a madder-red field, with clusters of leaves, entwined branches, and small cartouche motifs between them. The border frames the composition with a cream-ground botanical pattern and a row of miniature palmettes. Faded ivory, pomegranate green, and indigo-blue accents contrast with the crimson field.

Protect Its Elegance
To preserve the original splendor and silky texture of Carpetdocia’s handwoven creations made with natural fibers—which add value to your living space—for generations, a careful care routine is essential.
Immediate Action and Liquid Spills
When a liquid spills, timing is critical. Using a clean, slightly damp cloth, blot the liquid gently from the surface without rubbing. Always work in the direction of the rug’s pile (the natural direction in which the fibers lie). Rubbing can damage the shape of delicate fibers such as TENCEL™ and viscose. If in doubt, stop immediately.
Routine Care and Light Balance
For your weekly cleaning routine, always use a vacuum cleaner with low suction. High-powered upright vacuums and stiff brushes can damage the natural structure of handwoven yarns. To balance how natural yarns react to light and prevent uneven changes in color (fading), we recommend rotating your rug every 2 to 6 months.
Expert Care (Professional Cleaning)
Fine textures such as handwoven fibers, TENCEL™, viscose, and New Zealand wool should not come into contact with household chemical cleaners. These products can irreversibly damage the rug’s silky sheen and structural integrity. For a thorough clean, seek help only from professional rug care centers specializing in natural fibers.
